my thoughts on.... 'Dead of Winter'

my basic thoughts on this are short and sweet.... it's sloppy, it's got no real point and it's fairly uninteresting.... in other words.... stay away.... you've got a couple that get slipped some LSD and start tripping and thinking that they're being chased by a killer.... then slowly one of them turns into that person, sort of.... and then one person dies and then one other person dies in a chimney and it's over.... or is it....? eh? eh?.... 1 out of 5 stars.... don't waste your time even if you have nothing else to do.... watch something else.... i mean even if you don't have cable, you've always got something on PBS that's more interesting than this....

if you start watching this, turn it off and watch: 'P2', 'Santa's Slay' or 'Silent Night, Deadly Night'

my thoughts on.... 'The Tooth Fairy' (2006)

every once in a while you need to watch a crap little horror movie to cleanse your brain so you can enjoy the good horror movies.... this was my night to do that.... and granted, i was a bit curious about the storyline.... i wondered how they'd handle it.... in reality it wasn't all bad.... it had a few good moments.... and i don't regret watching it.... however, i don't know that i need to watch it again to find the little details i may have missed the first time around....

okay.... the plot: a man buys a bed and breakfast and finds out that it used to be owned by a woman who killed kids and stole their teeth.... there's also a subplot about the two local mechanics who hate the new owner and want him out of the house.... which i think was just added to give the Tooth Fairy more people to kill and to pad the script.... anyway.... he has a guest come to stay early, a man who does the upkeep on the grounds, his musician friend and his girl roadie and finally his fiance and her daughter. (who is the one who looses the tooth that brings the Tooth Fairy back for vengence).... it's not a very complicated story and i suppose it doesn't really need to be.... it's straight to DVD fodder.... that's all.
there's a lot of stuff that's just not needed and confusing.... like weird slow motion shots that make no sense in the storyline.... it's almost like it's another way to extend the movie.... there's also a CLASSIC bit where one woman is killed in an extremely grousome way and another girl killed on the front porch by a nail gun.... but when the main characters leave to go look for the missing little girl, the musician and the boarder decide it's a good time to have sex.... WTF....? it makes no sense in the storyline and is just a plot device to show boobies.... it honestly bothered me to think that there are two VERY dead people in the house and they don't care enough not to knock boots in the same house.... it's silly and pointless.... but i guess it's worth it just for that....

the kills are mediocre.... the villian is decent.... the characters are cardboard cut outs just there for the Tooth Fairy to kill.... i'd give it 2 out of 5 stars.... it's not the worst thing i've ever seen, but it's also far from the best.... it's on Netflix OnDemand and a rainy nights viewing with beer and a few other people with you.... other than that.... stay away and watch something worthwhile.... or perhaps use it like i did.... to cleanse your brain for the next good horror movie that comes along....

my thoughts on.... why Geico sucks....

so not too long ago, we switched insurance carriers because our current one was just too damned expensive and with our driving records we knew we could get a better deal.... we started shopping around and found that Geico was the lowest cost we could find and figured, "what the hell?"....

fast forward several months down the road.... i get in an accident with 2 parked cars in a Target parking lot.... and was stupid and drove off.... the damage was minimal and after going to court i was only charged with 'driving too fast for conditions', got 1 point on my license and had to pay $100.... no big deal, right....?

a little backstory.... Amy and i are both very safe drivers.... i have no accidents or tickets for nearly a decade.... the same goes for Amy.... we're the ideal customers for an insurance company.... low risk and we had a perfect payment history with our last company.... never missed a single payment....

back to the present.... we call Geico to get duplicate insurance cards mailed out since we were due for renewal.... and come to find out that they dropped us because of what happened to me with the accidents.... so i guess that always paying and having a stellar history just isn't enough for them.... so we've switched again and are paying $10 more for our policy and have had no problems so far....

i ask you to reconsider your policy, if you're with Geico.... i'm still in shock over what happened and would love to find out what the hell they were thinking.... or if it's just their general policy to be asses.... either way.... Geico can kiss my white hairy ass....

just a friendly reminder....

my thoughts on.... 'Necrosis'

we all know the story of the Donner party, right....? the ill-fated pioneers who had to resort to cannibalism to survive.... well, this movie ties directly in with the Donner party.... however, in this version, the Donner party are not only cannibals.... they're also murding monsters who have the blood lust to kill anyone who comes into their campsite....! that's not the history i remember.... and i'm not sure why they had to base this story on a historical event, rather than make up some similar story to fit the needs of their little horror flick.... that being said....

the plot is simple and messy.... a bunch of people go up to a cabin in the woods to have a little r&r for a while.... but the locals warn them that it's not safe up there and to turn back.... do they listen....? nope. and off they go.... once up at the cabin they re-tell the story of the Donner party and how it occured on that very mountain they were sitting on.... and soon someone shows up dead, someone goes crazy and everything turns to crap.... meanwhile a snowstorm has trapped them up there about 20 years since the last time a series of murders occured at the same cabin.... which a scrapbook in the basement explained very clearly....
the movie is not without some redeeming qualities, but they're few and far between.... one of the bad things is using Tiffany as one of the stars.... yes, THAT Tiffany.... as in former teen pop idol.... she's terrible.... and most the acting is sub par at best.... the storyline is weak, the script is delivered with nothing more than high school acting chops.... the horror is mostly ghost related.... but it's not worth the price of admission.... and by the ending of the movie, it all just felt so sloppy that i couldn't get behind it.... and i really tried.... the only thing that made me happy about this movie was the cameo by Michael Berryman of 'The Hills Have Eyes' and many other classic horror films....

2 out of 5 stars.... it's available on Netflix OnDemand.... but don't waste you're time unless you're really bored and want to see history re-written.... i'm not sorry i watched it, but i never have to see it again.... ever.

if you like this movie, see some better films like: 'Ravenous', 'The Donner Party' and 'Cannibal! The Musical'

my thoughts on.... 'Pirate Radio'

as you all should know, i'm a music lover.... perhaps some would say obsessed about music.... and i love a good film about music.... when i heard about this one, i was peaked instantly.... not too mention that the cast was amazing.... a strong group of grade 'A' actors who could all carry the movie just by themselves.... i had no idea about the story behind this.... it just sounded like an interesting story and had 'Joel' written all over it....

in the mid 60's, pirate radio was at it's peak and this is the story of a true pirate radio station.... so much so that it takes place on an actual ship.... where a group of men run a 24 hour radio station that plays all of the rock n' roll music of that era.... according to the story the regular radio stations didn't play the same kind of music and this was the only way for the masses to hear it.... and they had a huge following of listeners who loved the music and the guys who played it.... i don't want to give away too much of the storyline.... as it's a qualiy movie that is well worth the watch....
all of the actors are involved 100%..... the story is wel written and fun.... the music is amazing.... the direction is spot on.... and all in all it's an excellent film for music lovers and regular film lovers alike.... the story may not be totally original.... there are certain aspects that ring true from other storylines.... so it may sometimes feel like a movie you've seen before.... but that takes nothing away from it overall....

4 out of 5 stars for this little gem of a music based movie.... it has a lot going for it and i think it's worth watching and even re-watching.... i would give it the 'Joel' seal of approval.... it's available to rent everywhere and is worth your time to invest in it, because it pays off in spades....

my thoughts on.... 'Bundy'

so Parker Lewis can't lose, eh....? well, this movie proves that to be untrue.... what i mean is that Corin Nemec plays the lead role of Ted Bundy and doesn't do to bad of a job.... he's creepy where he needs to be and charming where he needs to be.... not the best retelling of this story that i've seen.... but it's a decent movie with decent qualities.... this movie is made by the same folks who made 'B.T.K.' (which is also reviewed in this blog....) it's obvious this is a slap dash, direct to video piece of filth that is only made to cash in on the serial killer-philes.... people who are fascinated by serial killers and find their stories interesting.... i'm betting, however, 10 to 1 that there are way better books and online articles about this man than this movie.... i'd put money on it.

Ted Bundy was considered a charming serial killer.... a man who could've had any woman he wanted, but instead turned to a life of crime.... (he's not really portrayed in that way in this movie).... he was known for being a smart guy and they make him out to be more of a child in this movie.... they also take some liberties with his method and his madness.... he has a serious hatred for women and kills them in some fairly brutal ways.... i guess i really shouldn't have expected too much from this.... it just fell in line with my theme for the night of serial killer movies and documentaries.....
if you have a spare bit of time on your hands.... it's interesting to watch Corin's take on the character.... and he's charismatic enough to hold your attention for the full hour and a half.... but this is not the recommended version of this story.... and a simple search online would find better fact based versions of this man's story.... he was a sick individual who got what he deserved in the end.... too bad it wasn't any earlier.... a few more lives could have been saved....

again, 2 out of 5 stars.... not a recommend movie.... it's available OnDemand on Netflix along with B.T.K..... but i'd stay away and see what other Hollywood movies you can find that are fictional or the occasional one that is a true story.... these direct to video titles are basically just serial killer porn that serve no real purpose.... just to clutter up the DVD shelves at the video store.... and to sucker in people who just don't know any better.... i knew what i was getting into, but i was curious anyway.... i guess i'm just funny that way....

if you liked this movie, check out these much better films: 'Hannibal', 'Manhunter' and 'Red Dragon'

my thoughts on.... 'B.T.K.'

this is a movie "inspired by the true story".... this is important to realize before you watch this movie.... it's not a true retelling of what actually happened in the B.T.K. case.... i didn't realize this when i went into it.... i just assumed it was going to be a bit more fact based.... sure they got a couple of things right, but overall it's just a reason to have Kane Hodder (Jason from several Friday the 13th films) go around and kill people.... i was less than impressed by it....

their version has B.T.K. as an overzealous compliance officer.... who tends to take his job a bit to seriously.... he's married with two teenage daughters and sneaks out occasionally to kill some women and sometimes men for no real reason.... we're never really given a motive.... he's an upstanding citizen to the outside world and to his church.... but soon all of that comes crashing down in one big mess....
i think Kane Hodder is an interesting fellow.... and as an actor, he's better than i expected he'd be, since mostof the movies i've seen him in he's behind a mask and doesn't say anything.... he does his best with the story and tries to make it interesting, but it all just falls flat.... there is nothing really special about the movie.... nothing really stands out.... its all just kind of there.... you know....? like they made it and just kind of did it for the hell of it....

2 out of 5 stars for this less than stellar movie.... and not something i would recommend to anyone actually interested in the case.... you're better off reading a true crime book instead.... the only reason i would tell anyone to see this is to see Kane Hodder do more than his usual typecasting.... other than that, junk.

if you like this movie, watch something better: 'Se7en', 'The Silence of the Lambs' and 'Zodiac'

my thoughts on.... 'The Hangover'

hype can make or break a movie.... and in most cases it tends to break it.... but every so often a movie lives up to the hype and it's well deserved.... with 'The Hangover', i don't know that i'd say it lived up to the hype.... but it was a pretty funny movie and worth watching once.... i mean i laughed out loud a couple of times and found myself smiling at quite a few spots.... was it the best comedy of the year....? nah.... but it wasn't the worst....

so you take 4 guys and put them in Vegas for a bachelor party and fill them with booze and what do you get....? 1 and a half hours of confusion and comedy.... three of the guys lose the 4th guy and end up with a baby in the closet, a tiger in the bathroom, a missing tooth and a whole lot of unanswered questions as they can't remember what happened the night before.... not one thing.... and that's the plot in a nutshell.... it's the guys putting together the last nights events as you join in and learn as they learn.... it's well put together and fairly original.... but i wouldn't recommend watching 'Bachelor Party' the same night.... (the Tom Hanks movie.)
i'll give just about any movie a shot.... and hype or no hype, every movie deserves some kind of an audience.... i mean, someone put a lot of time, energy and love into making it.... so why shouldn't at least a few people watch it, right....? this movie felt fairly fresh.... although i think with any other cast it might not have been nearly as enjoyable.... you almost needed smaller caliber actors to make it more believable.... plus you get Mike Tyson singing Phil Collins.... what more could you want....?

i'd give this a solid 3 out of 5 stars.... and would probably watch it again.... it's worth a second or third viewing and i think it will hold up to the test of time.... i would recommended it to anyone who likes their comedy with a dose of gross and a tad bit of screwball-ness.... however, you might think twice about your next plan to go on a bender....

if you liked this movie, check out: 'Bachelor Party', 'The 40 Year Old Virgin' and 'Out Cold'

my thoughts on.... 'Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day'

i'll admit.... i'm a little late to the Trailer Park Boys party.... and i've only seen this and the other movie..... none of the TV show.... however, i'm slowly becoming addicted to these guys.... there's just something funny about them that i can't explain.... but whatever it is, it makes me want to watch more of their stuff.... i currently have the entire TV series in my queue on Netflix ready to start a marathon.... so i can see the roots of the show....

between this and the original movie.... i have to say i enjoyed this a bit more.... with a more simplistic plot.... where the landlord of the trailerpark wants to turn their park into high end trailer park.... but runs into some trouble when the boys get out of prison and have other ideas.... the main bad guy has quit drinking and he and his partner do everything they can to win the boys over to their way of thinking.... and the entire time, Bubbles is just trying to get his kitties back.... so they boys try and raise the money anyway they can, right down to planning a bank heist.... meanwhile the main bad guy falls WAY off the wagon and hilarity ensues....
i found myself laughing a lot more at the situations in this movie.... and even to the point of laugh out loud moments.... i would watch this one again, if given the chance.... i can't wait to start the TV series and see what all the buzz has been about for the past several years.... i mean, who thought Canadians could be funny....? (besides Ryan Reynolds)....

my final verdict.... high 3 out of 5 stars.... a worthwhile watch for fans of the show and for non fans just looking for a good goofy comedy.... i mean you have a main character named Bubbles....! that alone is funny by itself....and he steals the show everytime he's on the screen.... anyway.... it's available OnDemand from Netflix right now.... so get off your duffs and load it up in the queue, grab your little glass of liquor and get ready to have an hour and a half of fun.... it's just that simple, eh....?

my thoughts on.... 'Undead'

i've owned this movie for a few years now.... and if you think you've seen it all in the zombie genre..... then you need to see this.... it's a terrific little Austrailian low budget horror flick that is as fun as it is worthwhile to watch.... it reminds me a bit of early Peter Jackson fare.... but perhaps with a slightly larger budget.... i just recently re-watched it during a zombie movie marathon that i had and i had forgotten how much i enjoyed it.... and how refreshing it was compared to all the other zombie movies out there.... and trust me, you've never seen a movie quite like this.... it's funny, it's gory, it's got great action and it takes a whole new twist on an old theme....

without giving all the plot away.... i'll try and stick to the basics.... it seems that things are falling from the sky and turning the population into the living dead.... a small group of survivors hold up in an old farm house and try and protect themselves from the onslaught of the undead headed for the house.... but that's when it gets weird.... i don't think i could explain it if i wanted to anyway.... so it's better for you to just watch it for yourself....
our main hero is unique.... our main heroine is a beauty queen.... the rest of the cast are all fun to watch and extremely likable.... especially the head police officer.... he says the 'F' word so much he makes it an artform.... not to mention he's hilarious.... the movie is worth it just for that.... and the action scenes with our hero are pretty kick ass.... nice double gun, slow-mo, triple barreled shotgun fun.... and a few acrobatics to boot.... (and you don't really notice until the end that he's missing a front tooth....!)

this is a great little unknown gem of a movie that needs a cult following.... it's worth multiple watchings and i would give it a high 4 out of 5 stars.... there were a couple of things i would have changed if i could.... but nothing major.... all the people involved must have had a lot of love for the project, because it bleeds through every scene.... it's not available to watch OnDemand.... so you'll have to rent it.... (that or stop by the house to watch it with me some night.).... in the end, if you like zombie movies.... this one is for you.... a zombie movie made by people who love zombies and wanted to share a new twist to make you remember why you loved zombies in the first place....

if you enjoy this movie, check out: 'Dead Alive', 'Bad Taste' and 'Dellamorte Dellamore aka: Cemetery Man'

my thoughts on.... 'Paranormal Activity'

i rented this movie with no other knowledge about it other than it was similar to 'The Blair Witch Project'.... and that's the way i wanted it.... i wanted to come in fresh and with no expectations.... i usually enjoy a movie more the less i know about it.... i'd heard good things about this movie.... and had even heard some people say that it really scared them quite a bit.... and it's been a while since i've been scared of a movie, so this peaked my interest even more to rent it....

a couple buy a video camera to document strange goings on in their home which they think may be paranormal.... they soon find proof to back up their gut instincts.... but this just leads to more questions as we find out that the main girl in the movie has been followed from house to house by an entity since she was a little girl.... they then call in outside help to get more information about the spirit and how to get rid of it and that's when things get really dark.... i don't want to give the entire plot away.... but it's interesting enough to be worth your time to rent this one and watch it alone in the dark....

with the comparisons to 'Blair Witch', i'd say some of them are grounded.... but overall the only real relation is that it's all very 'reality show-ish'.... it seems like it's all unscripted and that you're watching footage from a police file or something.... there's not a huge amount going on in the movie.... and the plot is sparse at best.... but the atmosphere makes up for all of that....

all in all.... a clever twist on an old theme.... very effective scares.... and some of the tactics are based in reality.... i found myself getting swept up in the storyline and got a little bit of a jump at the end of the movie.... but this vs. 'Blair Witch'....? i'd take the witch anytime over this.... 'Paranormal Activity' is worth a watch and possibly a second viewing.... but i don't know how much staying power it has.... i'd give it a good 4 out of 5 stars.... most certainly not crap....

if you enjoy this movie, check out: 'The Blair Witch Project', 'Suicide' and any of the paranormal shows on basic cable
