my thoughts on.... 'Apartment 143'

Good lord, where do I begin? First off, I really dig the 'found footage' movies that are out there. There have been a few pieces of garbage, but overall, they're pretty solid. 'Apartment 143' was suggested to me by a friend and falls vaguely into the 'found footage' sub-genre. Secondly, It was billed as a 'Paranormal Activity', but with the action those films were missing. Sadly, it was missing all the good stuff from those films and the action they were talking about was horrible.... at best. It showed its low budget shortcomings loud and clear. I've seen countless films that had little to no budget that have pulled off amazing things. This one obviously had some money behind it, but they must have spent it on milky white contacts, instead of a good script or decent actors. Everything felt stiff. It was like watching paint drying on cardboard. This movie was really just an exercise in trying to cash in on a proven sub-genre. The only really new things it brought to the table were.... nothing.

The plot was centered around a guy and his two kids that moved to an apartment. The house they used to live in became haunted after his wife (the kids mother) died suddenly. However, once they moved.... the spirt moved with them. So, they got involved with a paranormal investagative team and soon the team was hunting ghosts. There's some vague sub-plot about murder and possilbe incest. None of it ever really goes anywhere. There is some backstory with the investagators that is bland and unfinished. That's about it. Good guys win.... or do they?

All in all, this movie was a turd. Maybe I missed the hidden nuggets of candy that were wedged in the middle of the movie? Maybe I was not in the right mindset to watch a movie of this type? Maybe it just sucked? I think so. I didn't care about the characters. I lost interest in the movie after about 20 minutes in. The special effects were poor. They location was okay, but there are tons of apartments out there that are kind of creepy. And to top everthing off, there's a little 'surprise' at the end. I only wish I'd turned it off before that part happened. It made an already terrible movie, that much worse.

I think what the reviewer must have missed about the difference between this movie and the 'PA' films was the stuff you didn't see. I hear that said a lot about movies and films that rely on your brain over CGI. 'PA' is so successful because it plays on our fears and only we know what those fears are. So, if you have a fear of spirits or the things that go bump in the night, then you can relate to the films. And since you never really see what's haunting the characters in the film, then you can make that horror anything you want. 'Apartment 143' laid all its card on the table and left you with no room to imagine the horror within. Because what you are afraid of in your mind is FAR scarier than anything a guy behind a computer can create. But if you are someone that has to SEE the scary parts, the maybe 'Grave Encounters' is more for you. It falls into the same sub-genre as 'Apartment 143 and the 'PA' films. It also shows you the stuff you're scared of. The big difference between 'Apartment 143' and 'Grave Encounters' is, the ghosts in 'GE' are unique and actually quite frightening. There's suspense and terror there. 'Apartment 143' just re-hashed every ghostly cliche you've ever seen. Another one that is in the same boat is 'Paranormal Entity'. It's really just a 'PA' knock-off, but it succeeds on so many more levelas that 'Apartment 143'. It feels like something you've seen before, but it still creates tension and horror. I'd recommend that one over this one any day of the week. That's it.... plain and simple. 'Apartment 143'....it sucked.

All in all, I give 'Apartment 143' a 1 out of 5 star rating. It's a ghost story with no real scares and no re-watchability. If you decide to watch it, keep your expectations low and you bottle of Jack Daniels even closer.

my very brief thoughts on.... 'Assault Girls' aka 'Asaruto gâruzu'

Good god, I hardly even want to write about this, so called, movie. It was so hard to sit through and was not very good at all. About the best thing going for this is the cinematography, but even that could be seen in any late night soft core porn. It's all soft lenses and pretty people. I highly recommend that you go play a video game and just record each of the little in-between movie things. That's basically what 'Assault Girls' is.... a one hour long video game storyline. There is no real plot, no real dialouge, no real point. It literally is 1 hour out of a video game with live action people. It just makes me angry even thinking about watching it.

The so-called "plot": (taken from Netflix.com) "When a video-game company creates an immersive gaming environment where players wage war against gigantic sand-dwelling monsters, three gorgeous gals armed to the teeth (Meisa Kuroki, Hinako Saeki and Rinko Kikuchi) accept the challenge and jump into the virtual desert. But as they blaze their way into the game's higher levels, they face ever-more ferocious foes." Let me clarify that by "ever-more ferocious foes", they mean the same worms with slightly different markings. THIS MOVIE WAS CRAP! grrrr....Let me get this review over with, it's just making me mad thinking about the time I wasted. 1 out of 5 stars, for the visuals ONLY! Watch the trailer, if you want, it's the only thing worthwhile about the movie. You get all of it in a short little clip. Seriously, this is not something I recommend to anyone. At all. Ever. Period. Pure and utter garbage.

If you like this, we can't be friends. Go stare at a video game for an hour, it's probably more exciting. Did I mention this was CRAP!

my very brief thoughts on.... 'Barb Wire'

I went into this expecting nothing. I was told, by some, that it was a good/bad movie. What I quickly learned in about 10 minutes of the movie was that this was going to be complete crap. I didn't enjoy a single thing about this movie. I don't like Pamela Anderson, she's a waste of space and truly overrated. I can't say anything nice about this movie, so I won't say anything more.

1 out of 5 stars. The best part of this movie is when it ended. 1996 must have been a bad time for action movies. I think I blocked it out or maybe it was just this one.

If you like this.... you need help.

my very brief thoughts on.... 'DIE-ner (Get it?)'

sometimes Netflix OnDemand causes me to watch things that i would never have seen before if it wasn't for them.... usually, it's a good thing.... in this case, it wasn't.... as you can probably already tell by the title 'DIE-ner (Get it?)' that this movie is not going to be a piece of top notch filmmaking.... but i figured, what the hell....? it's billed as a horror comedy.... it has zombies and a serial killer.... it sounds pretty sweet.... but the problem is: it's not funny, the zombies are extremely apathetic, the characters have no charisma, and the story is about as interesting as drinking a glass of luke warm water on a warm day.... and for some reason, i'm still watching it.... i don't know why i can't turn it off, i suppose that deep down i'm hoping it'll get better.... i always want to give an indie movie a shot as i know that someone put a lot of time and effort into making their movie outside of the Hollywood mainstream.... and i still hold that philosophy.... my only request to the filmmakers is that they need to make sure they have a worthwhile product that will leave an impression regardless of budget.... because i've seen other filmmakers be successful with almost no money, but an amazing idea....
alright.... so now what....? i'm in the middle of a movie that i'm not really enjoying but for some reason, i can't turn it off.... i don't know that i can even feel good about rating it, until it's over.... but i'm pretty sure we're looking at a 1 out of 5 star effort and a movie that i won't ever need to see again, unless i run out of Advil PM.... are we on the same page....?

my very brief thoughts on.... 'The Gravedancers'

what happens when you take a lame concept, throw two B-grade actors amongst Z-grade actors, and then film it with mediocre special effects....? answer: 'The Gravedancers'....

this is one movie that i should have turned off when i realized exactly how bad it was becoming.... but for some reason i kept watching.... i suppose the masochistic side of me was thinking it might get better, however that never happened.... if anything, it just got worse and worse.... i mean, the concept alone is terrible.... three old friends go into a graveyard after the death of a friend and proceed to dance on the graves of three people.... they find out later that the three people were BAD people.... and they were in the BAD part of the cemetary.... and because they danced on their graves, the BAD people would be coming back from the grave to kill them within mere days of the dance.... the three BAD people are: a rapist, an axe murderer, and a pint-sized pyromaniac....
this movie comes off like a SyFy original presentation.... hell, those are better than this was.... i'm sure some people are out there that enjoyed this movie, but there are also people who really enjoyed 'Ernest Scared Stupid'.... i barely gave it 1 out of 5 stars.... i wish i could get my money back, but it was free OnDemand.... and time is something that you can never get back, even if you fly around the earth backwards really really fast.

if you like this, you should probably watch some SyFy original movies like: 'Anonymous Rex', 'Bloodsuckers', and 'Reign of the Gargoyles'

my very brief thoughts on.... 'Pervert!'

the poster boasts that this is "the most outrageous movie ever made".... i was outraged all right.

i'm going to start this review with my rating of it: 1 out of 5 stars.... this was a movie where they took 1 part Cinemax midnight movie, 1 part Russ Meyer movie, 2 parts low budget schlock, and 1 part stop animation.... mix for an hour and change, throw directly in the toilet.... that's the recipie for this movie.... it looks fairly nice, i mean the cinematography is decent.... but the script is about as entertaining as the phone book.... the actors, if you can call them that, are just there as talking props.... the unknown killer that's revealed at the ending, is just plain stupid.... and the nudity is pointless and tiresome.... i guess it's a step up for Mary Carey.... instead of doing porn, she can show her range in a mainstream movie.... LOL
i doubt any of you will actually ever watch this, but just in case.... i won't give away the ending.... needless to say, it's piss poor even by low budget standards.... the story goes that a son comes home to his father's after being away at college.... his father is with a much younger woman, played by Mary Carey.... some stuff occurs, people start dying and the son begins to suspect his father.... meanwhile, the son is having an affair with the younger woman, right in front of his father's face.... almost literally.... they eventually find out who the real killer is and that's the point where you either turn it off or pause it to drink until you're blind and just don't care anymore about what you're seeing....

bad, bad, bad.

instead of this, watch: a Cinemax late night movie, a Russ Meyer movie or paint drying

my very brief thoughts on.... 'Cheerleader Autopsy'

i won't lie, this movie sucks.... sucks bad.... i mean, just by the title alone you can assume that.... but it was even worse then i expected.... super low budget, crappy special effects, terrible acting, bad, bad.... bad.... the premise involves a bus of cheerleaders on the way to a competition when their bus crashes and death ensues.... it's followed by a suicide.... then the bodies are all taken to the morgue, a crooked morgue where they sell the human meat to the local dog food factory.... anyway, if it's not bad enough, the special effects look like mannequin's with ketchup on them.... they don't even try to make them realistic.... and that makes this that much worse....
it's OnDemand if you want to submit yourself to this.... but make sure you're drinking heavily and maybe have some friends over to enjoy it with you.... i don't condone this action.... this movie has been known to cause blindness, stupidity, and rage in 4/5 people.... and the 5th one isn't paying attention anyway.... 1 out of 5 stars....

my very brief thoughts on.... 'Faust: Love of the Damned'

i used to collect comics back in the late 80's and early 90's.... i had come across an ultra-violent comic called 'Grips' by a man named Tim Vigil.... i instantly fell in love.... it was kind of like Wolverine, without the mutation and with a LOT more blood.... soon after, Tim Vigil started a series called 'Faust: Love of the Damned'.... it was very similar to 'Grips', but it dealt with a man who made a deal with (basically) the devil.... to take revenge on those who murdered his significant other.... but the devil can't control him and he soon begins to wreak havoc and eventually confronts the evil 'M' himself.... it was a kick ass story, killer art, and every teenagers dream of a comic.... eventually (after i stopped collecting) i heard that Brian Yuzna, director of 'Re-Animator', was making a film version of the comic.... i was pretty excited, as Brian Yuzna is a fairly violent and disturbing director.... which made perfect sense with 'Faust'.... soon, stills from the movie started appearing and i begin to get a little concerned.... and when i finally saw an actual shot of Mark Frost as 'Faust' i nearly cried.... it was so terrible.... the reviews once it came out were terrible.... and a friend of mine, a mutual lover of Tim Vigil, saw the movie and told me how horrificly bad it was.... therefore i stayed away for a VERY long time.... it was recently released OnDemand from Netflix.... and i took the time to watch it, despite my better judgement.... i had a slight glimmer of hope that maybe it wasn't as bad as i'd heard.... and since my expectations were SO low, i figured that maybe i'd get some enjoyment out of it....

i was wrong.
Mark Frost's portrayal of 'Faust' was so over the top and bad that i almost turned it off within the first 15 minutes.... however, i generally will watch any movie to the end.... no matter how terrible.... so i soldiered on.... and it just got worse.... there was nothing good about this movie.... nothing.... the worst part was the costume for 'Faust'.... it was obviously made of latex or rubber (it wiggled when he moved) and made the character look like a bad SyFy original movie villan.... the special effects were sub-par.... the writting sucked.... the ending nearly made me hunt down Tim Vigil just so i could punch him in the testicles.... basically, what i'm saying is, "Don't watch this movie. Under any circumstances.".... i can never unsee what i saw.... i can't wash my brain clean of this giant piece of poo.... 1 out of 5 stars.... and i really wish i could give it negative stars....

well, well, well.... Catherine Breillat you've done it again.... you've written another pretentious, overly hyped piece of crap.... at least this one only ran a bit over an hour.... i've sat through three of your films now an i can honestly say i'm not a fan.... and i don't understand your place in cinema.... maybe i'm watching the wrong films of yours....? perhaps i don't understand them....? (i kind of doubt it.) or perhaps they're just garbage....? just because something is provocative and the people talk like overly educated hipsters doesn't make it art.... and just because you include XXX rated nudity and sex, doesn't make it high art.... i've seen films that include hard core scenes and they made sense with the story.... in your movies, it seems like you do it just to shock and to give yourself a name....
to everyone else who may see this movie or 'Romance' or 'A Real Young Girl'.... stop yourself before you start.... or watch it and see if you agree with what i'm saying....? 'Anatomy of Hell' is OnDemand right now on Netflix.... i personally have seen enough of her work now that i can say i'm not a fan and i've given her every opportunity to make me one.... she's going to continue making movies and she's going to continue getting praise and i'm going to continue ignoring them.... ah well.... so be it.

if you want something sexually explicit with bad dialogue, watch a porn.

my very brief thoughts on.... 'Someone's Knocking At The Door'

i will never know exactly what possesed me to watch this movie.... and i was so happy when it was over.... there was nothing redeeming about this movie.... there was nothing interesting about this movie.... there was nothing worthwhile about this movie.... it wasn't a pleasure to watch.... the script was godawful.... the directing was subpar at best.... the actors were horrific.... the plot was z-grade porno with a bit of blood and gore.... i don't even want to dignify this movie by explaining the plot (if there was one).... basically, it was a lot of gross out stuff and drugs.... the ending was predictible and lame as all get out.... i don't even know how in the hell this movie got funding.... let's hope this put the nail in the coffin for anyone involved from every making a movie again.... i'd rather watch beige paint dry than watch this again.... less than 1 out of 5 stars, if that was possible....!

my very brief thoughts on.... 'Miner's Massacre' aka 'Curse of the Forty-Niner'

don't ask me why i even bothered adding this one to my Netflix OnDemand queue.... but i did.... i suppose i was hoping for a 'good/bad' movie.... but what i got was a 'bad/terrible' movie.... nothing about this was worthwhile.... not even Karen Black could save this movie.... it was pure and utter crap, from start to painful finish....
i won't even bore you with the plot.... well, maybe i will.... a miner (who's some kind of satanist) puts a curse on his gold so that if anyone takes any of it, he'll come back from the dead and kill them.... so some young people find it.... he comes back.... attaches a pick ax to his arm and proceeds to kill everybody.... that's it.... 1 out of 5 stars.... and yes, they left it open for a sequel.

if you put this in your queue.... you deserve what you get....

my very brief thoughts on.... 'Where the Wild Things Are'

this may get me some serious hate mail.... but i have to speak my mind.

'Where the Wild Things Are' was one of my favorite books as a child.... it sparked my interest in writing.... and it was the first script i ever wrote.... as i transposed it for the stage and it was put on at the local library.... i was a child at the time.... so you can see that i loved this story and was curious to see how Spike Jonze would bring it to the screen.... i got excited when i started seeing the stills.... and the reviews were all good.... so i got even more excited.... tonight i saw the movie.

this movie was depressing.... dark.... the soundtrack was done by Karen O and she was the wrong choice, the WRONG choice.... this was not a movie for kids.... not a movie for adults.... it was a big waste of money.... the boy who played Max was unlikeable and i hated the fact that he took such a beloved character and made him into a terrible brat with little to no redeeming qualities.... sure the wild things looked amazing.... but if you don't care about the main character and the way the movie was put together just makes me not care how good they looked.... i just kept hoping the movie would get better.... and the joy that i had with the book as a child would somehow leap off the screen, it never happened.... as a matter of fact, i just kept wanting it to end.... i'm sorry to all of you who felt this was a wonderful movie.... i just think that Spike Jonze missed the mark by a mile.... and turned the book into a sour tasting hateful lemon....
1 out of 5 stars.... and i don't recommend this to anyone.... i feel the loss of a wonderful childhood memory thanks to Mr. Jonze and his whiny, bratty, hateful, ADHD Max.... his dark and depressing storytelling.... and the artsy fartsy un-childlike background music by Miss Karen O.... oh and my kids didn't like it either.

my very brief thoughts on.... 'The Morgue'

imagine you're a screenwriter.... you've got a great idea for a movie.... so you write a script.... you get the money to get it produced.... you get not one, but TWO directors for it.... you get one name star.... and you make your dream movie.... your dream has now come true.... and that brilliant idea that started it all is now on celluloid for all the world to marvel at too.... amazing.

too bad it sucks.

this movie deserves less than 1 star, but that's not possible on Netflix.... and to be honest, i barely made it through this mess of a movie.... the only reason i even added it to the queue and was so quick to watch it was because of the fact that Heather Donahue (The Blair Witch Project) was getting top billing....! i couldn't wait to see her again.... little did i know what i was really in for.... good lord.... she only had about 20 minutes of screen time.... maybe total.... and i honestly i didn't care about any of the characters in this movie.... not even hers.... not even a little bit.... and what's the point of a horror movie or any movie if you don't give a rats ass about the characters involved....? i was hoping that maybe i'd get lucky, after about 15 minutes of the movie, that something would go drastically wrong at Netflix and i'd never be able to finish it.... oh well, that never happened....
here's the genius plot: a girl works at a morgue with only one other person, the nightwatchman. a family of 3 run out of gas and show up. two guys, who've been in an accident, show up. we keep getting flashbacks about a mortician who killed himself and has come back for his revenge. no one is safe. everything gets confusing and horribly edited. people start dying off one by one as the group tries to find a way to escape. but where's the nightwatchman? he's not the killer, but he's strangely missing and aloof. then the twist at the end happens. OOOO a twist.

do not waste one minute of your time to watch this.... stay away.... the twist is pulled off horribly.... it's kind of confusing at first.... and the script and editing job don't help things much.... honestly, who gives a damn anyway....? just thank god it's over.... i'm not demanding my time back.... i at least got to see Heather for awhile.... and she does so few movies it was nice.... but other than that.... garbage on film.... i have no idea why this was even made....? it should have stayed a script on someone's coffee table.... safe from the world.... anyway.... at least i can warn you.... don't even hope for the bad/good factor.... this is just bad/bad/bad.... 1 out of 5 stars, in case you didn't get that from my earlier comment.

in closing, it's like having your teeth pulled really slowly while under a mild sedation that causes things to be blurry.... but you still feel every pinch, pull and tug.... and your dentist is Stevie Wonder. got it....?

watch ANYTHING else.

my brief thoughts on.... 'Bones'

okay.... so who's great idea was it to cast Snoop Dogg as a horror villian....? and who's even better idea was it to set up this movie for a sequel....???? as you can already tell, i wasn't a big fan of this movie.... it's low budget.... they used the same blood George A. Romero used in 'Dawn of the Dead' (1978).... Snoop Dogg is not a great bad guy.... the special effects are piss poor.... and it was nothing special at all.... i did, however, watch the whole film from beginning to end and felt dumber for doing it.... i mean you can't go wrong with dogs vomiting maggots, right....?

the story goes like this.... Jimmy Bones is a pimp-ish guy from the 70's who is loved by his neighborhood, but isn't the cleanest guy on the block.... meaning he's in to drugs and illicit things.... kind of like a nicer mobster.... he soon finds himself at the hands of some guys who don't like him and they kill him and bury him in the basement of his home.... fast forward to the present.... the home is now haunted by the afformentioned vomiting dog and the ghost of Bones.... and anyone who sets foot inside is killed.... some young people buy the house to start a dance club with, you guessed it, horrible results.... lots and lots of maggots.... and death.... the witch doctor lady down the street gets involved, there's a fight and things happen that no one really cares about....
2 out of 5 stars.... almost 1.... i don't know what the boost in my rating is from.... there's not much good about this movie.... i think the only reason i kept watching was because i thought it might get better.... it didn't.... stay away from this one.... it's not worth your time.

let's keep this brief.... i can sum up this movie in 4 words: "'Hostel' on a train." (only not in a good way....) this movie borrows HEAVILY from the 'Hostel' films, but it has a twist and not even a very good one.... it's bloody and messy for no real reason.... and is about as pointless as 'Under Seige 2: Dark Territory'.... but at least with that movie, it was fun and didn't take itself too seriously.... this one is way too serious. 1 out of 5 stars.... for Thora Birch fans only.... and i can't say that i'm one of them.... i'd ask for my money back, but it was free OnDemand from Netflix.... stay away from this like the plague....

if you even bother with this one, watch something else instead: 'Hostel', 'Hostel 2' or 'Under Seige 2: Dark Territory'

my thoughts on.... 'Alive or Dead'

sometimes a cover to a DVD can be misleading.... actually, anymore these days you CAN'T judge a book by it's cover.... and in this case, they spent more money on the cover artwork than the actual movie itself.... this was one giant waste of time that i wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy.... the story is piss poor at best.... the characters are dumb and pointless.... the villan is awful.... the special effects are sub par.... the ending is horrible.... overall, this movie just plain sucked.... granted, once i started it, i had to finish it.... i can't judge a movie without watching the whole thing and gathering my thoughts based on the picture as a whole, not just from the first 15 minutes.... 1 out of 5 stars.... this is pure dreck and one of the reasons why not everyone should be allowed to be filmakers.... i've seen home movies of a trip to the box factory that were more exiting then this.... you're better off watching paint dry.... at least with that you have something useful when the movies over, instead of your IQ dropping a few points.... don't go anywhere near this movie, ever, for any reason, period.

my thoughts on.... 'Dead of Winter'

my basic thoughts on this are short and sweet.... it's sloppy, it's got no real point and it's fairly uninteresting.... in other words.... stay away.... you've got a couple that get slipped some LSD and start tripping and thinking that they're being chased by a killer.... then slowly one of them turns into that person, sort of.... and then one person dies and then one other person dies in a chimney and it's over.... or is it....? eh? eh?.... 1 out of 5 stars.... don't waste your time even if you have nothing else to do.... watch something else.... i mean even if you don't have cable, you've always got something on PBS that's more interesting than this....

if you start watching this, turn it off and watch: 'P2', 'Santa's Slay' or 'Silent Night, Deadly Night'

my thoughts on.... 'Necrosis'

we all know the story of the Donner party, right....? the ill-fated pioneers who had to resort to cannibalism to survive.... well, this movie ties directly in with the Donner party.... however, in this version, the Donner party are not only cannibals.... they're also murding monsters who have the blood lust to kill anyone who comes into their campsite....! that's not the history i remember.... and i'm not sure why they had to base this story on a historical event, rather than make up some similar story to fit the needs of their little horror flick.... that being said....

the plot is simple and messy.... a bunch of people go up to a cabin in the woods to have a little r&r for a while.... but the locals warn them that it's not safe up there and to turn back.... do they listen....? nope. and off they go.... once up at the cabin they re-tell the story of the Donner party and how it occured on that very mountain they were sitting on.... and soon someone shows up dead, someone goes crazy and everything turns to crap.... meanwhile a snowstorm has trapped them up there about 20 years since the last time a series of murders occured at the same cabin.... which a scrapbook in the basement explained very clearly....

the movie is not without some redeeming qualities, but they're few and far between.... one of the bad things is using Tiffany as one of the stars.... yes, THAT Tiffany.... as in former teen pop idol.... she's terrible.... and most the acting is sub par at best.... the storyline is weak, the script is delivered with nothing more than high school acting chops.... the horror is mostly ghost related.... but it's not worth the price of admission.... and by the ending of the movie, it all just felt so sloppy that i couldn't get behind it.... and i really tried.... the only thing that made me happy about this movie was the cameo by Michael Berryman of 'The Hills Have Eyes' and many other classic horror films....

2 out of 5 stars.... it's available on Netflix OnDemand.... but don't waste you're time unless you're really bored and want to see history re-written.... i'm not sorry i watched it, but i never have to see it again.... ever.
